MUSKEGON, MI - Muskegon's newest sports facility will have participants burning up to 1,000 calories an hour - and working up a sweat.

Planet 3 Extreme Air Park is expected to open on Saturday, June 9, at 1740 E. Sherman Road in Muskegon.

With about 15,000 square feet of trampoline-related activity space, the parks can accommodate up to 200 jumpers at a time - and "flight tickets" do sell out, said Moananui Haretuku, operations manager. Planet 3 is most popular with people ages 13-25 but is open to all ages.

Haretuku recommends purchasing tickets online to reserve a one- or two-hour flight time. A one-hour pass is $11 for children 6 and younger, and $14 for people 7 and older. For two hours, it costs $17 for those under 6 and $20 for those over 7. First-time visitors must also purchase a pair of reusable safety socks for $3.

The park will be open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Most of the jump area is the open court with many small square trampolines and long tumble tracks. There's also a "dunk zone," trapeze and diving board over a foam pit, a "performance trampoline" area that is surrounded by walls and platforms, two "ninja warrior" courses over a foam pit, an "extreme dodgeball" court, "battle beams," aerial silks, a rock wall and climbing net, and a kids' court for those 6 and younger.

The entire trampoline area, including the walls, is black-light responsive. That feature enhances the weekly "club nights" from 9 p.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays. There's also a "club sound system."

Planet 3 also includes three party rooms, a reception area and offices. The entrance is on the side of the building. In all, the space is about 25,000-square-feet inside a former Target store.

Planet 3 employees are gearing up to welcome their first customers. Finishing touches include safety signs and waiver stations.

The company takes special care when it comes to safety, Haretuku said, although injuries can still happen.

All jumpers are required to watch a safety video before ascending to the trampoline area, rules are posted throughout and up to eight "lifeguards" are on duty looking for unsafe behavior, he said. In addition, everything in the jump area is padded, including the floors, walls and rest areas. Padding throughout the facility is three inches thick, double the recommended 1.5-inch thickness.

"Safety is always first," Haretuku said.

The Utah-based company plans to hire 30-40 people to work at the park.

The company also operates air parks in Clarksville, Tenn.; Moscow, Idaho; and Duluth, Minn. Locations in Tennessee and Idaho opened during summer 2017, and the Minnesota park opened this year.

Muskegon's park will be the second one in Michigan; a location in Flint opened in May.

The 95,000-square-foot building at 1740 E. Sherman Blvd. has been empty since Target moved to a new location on Harvey Street in the Lakeshore Marketplace during 2007. It was purchased by Pacifica Muskegon LLC during 2016.

Ollie's Bargain Outlet opened in a portion of the former Target in April. That leaves one more retail space in the building.

Planet 3 is in a strip mall with other retail outlets, including PetSmart, Big Lots, Jonathan Stevens Mattresses and Harbor Freight Tools. Out lot businesses include Fazoli's and Panera Bread restaurants.
