Rare November tornado hits Connecticut, Rhode Island

New Haven, Connecticut (Associated Press)-The National Weather Service said on Sunday that the two tornadoes that hit Rhode Island and southeastern Connecticut this weekend were the first to hit the area in November since at least 1950.

The service confirmed that two tornadoes landed on Saturday night-an EF-1 near Stonington and Westerly, Rhode Island, and an EF-0 at North Kingstown, Rhode Island. A representative of the service was investigating the damage in the area on Sunday. There were no reports of deaths or injuries.

According to the service’s preliminary report, EF-1 estimates that the peak wind speed is up to 90 mph (145 km/h) and the maximum path width is 100 yards (91 m). The tornado in North Kingston is estimated to have a maximum wind speed of 80 miles per hour and a maximum path width of 150 yards.

Both tornadoes uprooted several trees. In the path of EF-1, the house’s gutters and shutters were torn off, the trampoline was stuck on a wire about 20 feet high, the metal shed was lifted and turned over, and then crushed by a large tree branch, among other damage, According to the service.

On the path of the North Kingstown tornado, at least four telephone poles broke, and a fallen tree damaged windows and roofs.

Both tornadoes landed about a mile and a half.

NWS stated in another tweet that it was unable to fully investigate the Scituate area of ​​Rhode Island due to the sunset.
