The city of Oakley will not be hosting its Cityhood Celebration this year and is replacing the longtime event with Summer Fest on July 2. four

“The transition from Cityhood Celebration to the downtown Summer Fest event has presented a great opportunity to activate our downtown and encourage residents to support the restaurants and merchants,” said Oakley’s Recreation Manager, Lindsey Bruno. “As the event moves downtown, we are also expanding to bring live entertainment, a cornhole tournament, car show, and 5k fun run.”

The free event will also run during the day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and not include a fireworks display as it did in past years. As with previous downtown festivals, like the fall Heart of Oakley Festival, this event will be located between the Oakley Plaza (Grocery Outlet) and City Hall. Main Street will be closed for through traffic between Vintage Parkway and Norcross Lane before, during, and after the event. Moving downtown gives more space to spread out and offers the use of Oakley City Park’s covered stage area.

The new car show will feature up to 40 cars, trucks, and motorcycles of all makes and models. Car reservations for the car show will all be done in advance due to limited space. Awards for the car show will be given out at approximately 1:30 p.m. on the event day.

There will be plenty for kids to enjoy at this year’s Summer Fest, including jumpers, basketball bungee, bungee trampoline, big splash, rock wall, giant slide, face painting, goat petting zoo, and a balloon artist. The children’s area is $5 per child, with children five and under free.

Live entertainment includes groups like the funk, soul, and rock n roll sounds of The Floorshakers, The Real Thang Band with a musical trip through the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and Oakley’s very out Local Jazz Band with members made up of Freedom High School band alumni members.

Also, this year, a 5K fun run will take place on the Ironhouse Sanitary District property at 450 Walnut Meadows Drive, Oakley, accessible from downtown Oakley at Main Street, Rose Ave, and Districts Way. Check-in time for the run is 6:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. The run starts at 7 a.m. and finishes at 8:30 a.m. Admission is $25 per runner and includes a running bib, commemorative medal, fun swag, and shirt.

To continue its Sesquicentennial, the City of Antioch is hosting an array of activities throughout the Independence weekend that will conclude with the City’s annual fireworks display over the river.
