PHOENIX — Drivers won’t have to worry about scheduled closures on metro Phoenix freeways this Memorial Day weekend.

“While the Arizona Department of Transportation can’t control the price of gasoline, the agency is giving drivers a Memorial Day weekend break when it comes to construction closures along the state’s network of highways,” ADOT said in a press release.

There will be no full construction or maintenance closures from Friday afternoon through Monday night to limit the impact on holiday travel, ADOT said.

However, drivers were advised to still prepare for a slow down and merge safely when approaching and traveling through existing work zones, as well as allow extra time during peak periods and be prepared for unscheduled highway closures or delays due to crashes, disabled vehicles or other incidents such as wildfires.

In addition, ADOT recommends people pack extra drinking water and other necessary items like a phone charger, prescription medications and a flashlight in case a travel delay does occur.

Drivers should also be aware of possible changing weather conditions, including dust, and be safe on the road by never driving while impaired, wearing a seat belt, obeying speed limits, getting plenty of rest and checking the vehicle before traveling.

People are also asked not to park in areas with grasses and brush as vehicle components could start a fire.

ADOT provides real-time highway conditions online, on Twitter or over the phone at 511.

Drivers can also get alerts and alternate route notifications via ADOT’s mobile app.
