A woman who was formerly “the biggest porn star in the world” has called for the adult film industry to be made “illegal”, saying she doesn’t “think it’s good for anyone”.

From Illinois, US, Lana Rhoades – whose real name is Amara Maple – was 19 when she appeared in her first scene, going on to star in more than 250 films during her eight-month adult film career between 2016 and 2017.

Speaking to The Skinny Confidential Him & Her podcast, the now-26-year-old said she’d been left scarred by the experience.

“I just don’t think that it’s good for anyone. They should make it illegal,” Rhoades said.

The mother-of-one recalled wanting to join the industry after being enchanted by the seemingly extravagant lives of Hugh Hefner’s girlfriends on the TV series The Girls Next Door. (The “dark underbelly” of the Playboy empire – one rife with drug use, sexual abuse and bestiality – was ultimately revealed in a 10-part documentary earlier this year).

“I watched the show and I was like, ‘Their lives look so glamorous compared to mine,’” Rhoades said.

“I’m here trying to stop my sister from committing suicide every day and I could be jumping out of a trampoline into a pool in this big mansion.”

When she moved to LA, however, and ultimately appeared in her first film, Rhoades realised how “inexperienced” she was, as she’d “only slept with one person at this point”.

“For some reason I never comprehended that to do porn, you actually have to have sex with people,” she said, going on to criticise the inherent nature of “having to have sex with people that you didn’t choose to have sex with” as part of the job.

Rhoades added that she found her rise to fame in the industry bizarre – becoming the most-searched star on Pornhub, with a whopping 345 million views.

“It’s crazy to make one decision when you’re 19 years old and, you know, become the biggest porn star in the world,” she said.

Ultimately, she hated the feeling of “performing”.

“It’s like circus acts. As a performer, when I was doing it, it was like, ‘What face can I make?’ ‘What sound can I make?’ ‘What can I do in this movie to make it the best one?’”

Rhoades, now a model and fashion designer, left the industry – which she said was “infested with drugs and alcohol abuse” – in 2017.

She explained her time as an adult film star didn’t impact her personal sex life, describing herself as “pretty much asexual”.

“I don’t like having sex,” Rhoades said.

“I never hook up with people, I don’t find people attractive and I’ve always been like that.

“It’s not like there was a change after doing porn.”
